If your using using a very specific technique and under very strict controls and just to get a very specific point of information, you can get valuable and timely data. If your just being a jack@ss and beating/maiming/injuring someone just because you can (like McCain was subject to in VN or the @sshats who were playing the nightshift at Abu Ghraib) then you end up with nothing credible. Besides, if someone is going to those extremes, they are not after any real information. They are doing it as a power trip to show they own you and can do as they like with you. Actual torture is less about information and more about the psychological need of the captor to prove his superiority.
